What Is This World Coming To?

Posted by stick-figure-girl

The other day I was reading the labels on one of those Franzia wine boxes that someone had brought to a party at our house. As I examined the top of the box I saw a sign that almost made me pass out:

They make perishable wine now!!!!!!!! That is probably the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard!!!! I've heard the old people griping about how "Nothing lasts any more" and "It's broken almost right away" and "In my day things were made to last," but PERISHABLE WINE???? Isn't that going a little overboard?

So, I have made a new saying.

Unfaithful friends are like Franzia wine. Nice at first but after a few months they spoil and you have to throw them away."

Is anyone else disturbed by this? Is wine even wine if it can't be allowed to age? This is quite the historical event...I can't believe this hasn't received more publicity. In fact, that's why I wrote a post about it.

I believe we tradcats must be supporters of the traditional, ageable wine.

I'll drink (some traditional wine) to that.

amen to that... perishable wine! good heavens!

I had a saying, "Good humor, like good wine, is best when dry..." but I will say yours is quite good too, Sticky.

Oh yeah? Now they got screw-top wine, too. Instead of a cork, it's a twisty cap, you know, like a coke bottle? Geez, how romantic is that?! Good grief. But I like the saying...

i like the saying it is pretty insane that there is perishable wine...what would tata say????

It may be the wine boxes.

In bottles it would not perish I think.

I am not an expert myself, but I think it has something to do with lesser or greater exposure to oxygen.

Or I may be wrong, bureaucrats are taking aging and changed taste for perishing (ok, after one hundred or more years, wine in a bottle risks being plain flat).

Bottle or box - confer marriage and old maidenhood.

Not all wine is meant to age, so the expiration date is not necessarily indicative of "bad wine," although a box container typically is.

If the wine isn't meant to age, a screw top is a fine option, as it keeps the wine in the condition intended by the winemaker.

Besides, how romantic are cork chunks in vino suo?

True that red wine is a better ager than rosé, for instance.

Beaujoulais is a typical just-after-fermentation wine, as are the whites of many Austrian vineyards.

Cork chunks in wine can however be avoided with usual care.

I mean G K Chesterton once tried to open a door with a corkscrew*, but even he did not complain about cork chunks in the wine.

I don' think I've ever had box wine, I've had twist-top, but never box.
but still am rather partial to a nice port. (well also white wine, then sweet red, and then red)

dry and red is the best :) - although I don't mind a different kind now and then.

Thomas:
Port-lovers UNITE!!!

I also love a good Port. It's a Portuguese wine and growing up my dad (who is a full-blooded Portugee) always had it on hand for meals and such.

i dont really like wine...at least its better than wiskey...i couldnt even swallow that

I almost for got to mention rose(I don't know how to do your little accent mark thingy) I very very much enjoy a chilled rose. It rather depends my mood, but I think over all I still like port the better.

Really? I didn't know you're half Portugees!(I probably misspelled that) whats your other half?

Oh then you don't like Cognac, too. cause that's rather, in my opinion, like drinking distilled Pinesole. yugghhk! leave it as wine don't make it worse.(cognac, is a distilled mediocre wine)

I occasionnally sip either whisky or cognac, but I prefer wine, cider or beer.

Wine: red. Esp. with food. Port or Madeira will do with the dessert or cheese. (Do you enjoy blue cheese? I have heard USAmericans tend to avoid it, and I have not seen any blue in Spain)

White, with light foods, chicken or fish or sandwiches or such, or before a meal.

Rosé is often seen as weak, because it is a red weak in colour and tannines. I have been to Provence, in taste and alcohol they are no weaker than other wines. Down there a man may wear a pink shirt without incurring any doubts as to his masculine identity.

Beers, do you know these sweet Belgian beers as Leffe or Affligem?

Hildebrandon, I will second what Hans-Georg has to say... even broken corks can be removed without getting any in the wine... I am a cork-removing expert. ;)

Expirable wine is a rather horrendous idea. I prefer the traditional bottle... although if it's good wine the container doesn't much matter, now, does it? :p
